The importance of SITL in AUTF’s strategy, the impact of the Paris Olympics and the promotion of diversity within the logistics sector

Interview with Denis Choumert, President of AUTF, on the current challenges of logistics and freight transport in France.

In this interview, Denis Choumert, President of the French Freight Transport Users Association (AUTF), explains how the group’s participation at SITL helps contractors to keep abreast of the latest innovations. He also discusses digitalisation, promoting diversity and the expected impact of the Paris Olympics on the logistics sector.

How do AUTF and ADEME assess the Fret 21 scheme, eight years after its launch? Have new large companies joined this ambitious initiative?
Fret 21 was initiated in 2015 by Ségolène Royal, then Minister of Ecology, during COP 21 in Paris. After a three-year pilot, the programme only really took off in November 2018 with the launch of the EVE programme. Over the past four years, AUTF and ADEME have succeeded in mobilising nearly 300 groups, companies and establishments, among the 1,300 companies made aware by AUTF employees of the interest of Fret 21 for their CSR policy.

SITL is devoting a special theme to the position of women in the transport and logistics sector. How is AUTF contributing to this development?
AUTF did not only advocate for a greater presence of women in logistics organisations at this edition of SITL. As a founding member of France Logistique and vice-president of this organisation, we are working with AFT to promote this cause by identifying the needs in terms of jobs and skills in the logistics sector and finding ways to meet them. Attracting more women to jobs such as driving, warehousing and planning & operations is crucial to achieving this goal. AUTF is leading the way by having hired 7 women out of a total of 12 employees in 2022.

2024 will be the year of the Olympic Games in Paris. What will be the impact on freight transport? How will AUTF adapt?
It was foreseen and examined in detail, well before the Olympic Games began, that the organisation of the Games would have a significant impact on the logistics around the Games and the visitors who flock to them. AUTF, in collaboration with other federations and stakeholders involved, has participated in numerous exchange sessions to analyse this impact and to help operators prepare by addressing three main topics: the provision of additional transport resources, storage facilities and stocks to meet the increased demand and more difficult access conditions, and the management of traffic and access to venues that consume goods.
